My thoughts of Bernie Fuchs

As we move toward 2010, lets take a moment to look back at the events and deaths in 2009. Sure, we lost Michael and Farah but in the world of illustration a legend was lost too. His name Bernie Fuchs. Bernie Fuchs displayed his talent as a versatile painter in magazines, books and posters. The boundaries of fine art and commerce art closed because of Fuchs talent. When talking about Americas best Illustrators Bernie is always mentioned. His style influenced many of today's professional illustrators.
I just wanted to share some of these thoughts of Bernie Fuchs in a world over exposed with Tiger Woods and Michael Jackson stories.

I'll be back?

I'm currently considering my return to work as a professional artist.....As many of you know in the 80's and 90's I worked specializing as an art director for corporate clients. It is funny that most of my clients and colleagues are now retired. Back then I was the talented youngster in the advertising and publications business. Lately, I've been test marketing a comic book about a group of hot rod detectives which will also have spin off products including; toys, web motion advertising, and a music video. Thank you for your interest in my art and I'll keep you posted. If I do this..."IF"... I will be seeking studio space and people to work with. So feel free to contact me. If you are a paying customer looking for an artist, printer, or photographer, I will happily refer you to someone.
Bests, DANtheMAN

Chincoteague Va. Photograph

Chincoteague Va
Sometimes photos are the only way to treat a subject properly. Attempting to paint this scene would produce a painting that looks unrealistic. So photography is the choice and it is as real as it gets.

Discovery of ancient art

At that age...my Dad looked like a giant. The sloppy hair and ungroomed mustache is possible. I'll have to look for a photo to confirm.

The 80's influences in my art....

For those that know me I'm not much for looking back at old art projects. The next project is always the best....but here is a look back. In the 1980's I went to Mohawk Valley CC in Utica N.Y. and if it was not for the invention of facebook, I doubt I'd have much thought of looking back. This piece was for a class Hank Godlewski taught. FYI...Hank passed away in 2008 he was a fine teacher and a talented illustrator. I wonder what happened to his massive collection of TV guide covers? We learned of Bob Peak, Richard Amsel, Bernie Fuchs and it was good! HaHa. I was also influenced in by the 80's work of Denis Mukai, Leroy Newman.
About the above piece....Ronald Reagan had a popular presidential rating. I was showing a political issue of those trying to change his popularity. Ronald Reagan did receive my vote for those politicooos who wish to attack me. The poverty characters were inspired by Will Eisner. The materials used were ink, dyes, markers and???. Lets' just say mixed media.

Syracuse Nationals Artsy Stuff

Click photo to enlarge
I had the opportunity to go to the Syracuse Nationals on 7.19.09. I just wanted to share some artsy stuff. From Awesome Airbrush, Talented Pinstripers, Cool Graphic Art of Max Grundy, and some comic book culture ("Batmobile" Adam West with Julie Newmar). The trendy saying now is to refer to this as "non-art" because it does not fall under traditional art. Like tattoo's I anticipate seeing much growth and exposure in this market for years to come.

Why Dan the Man?

Greetings my name is Dan Thompson. I often promote myself as Dan the Man not out of ego but my friends just call me that. This (Dan the Man) also separates me from other artists of the same name. Traditionally my art has been fun, emotional, and often colorful. I am influenced more by commercial art than fine art although I love both. I place more value to the opinions of the people willing to write a check than groups of socialite art snobs. I believe artists should show a sense of individuality and uniqueness in their work. While some might see a certain style in my work, I believe it is more like my current state of mind during that artistic project. My brain works a little differently than most. I tend to see things visually first while words are more like a second language to me. I like light hearted visually appealing images. If you believe all artwork should be deep & meaningful some of my work is not for you.

Thank you for your interest in me and my art!

Sincerely.....DANtheMAN
